Magnify The Lord

After all the presents are open and we are sitting together enjoying fellowship with the ones we love, don’t forget to celebrate the birth of Christ – the real reason for the season. Let us remember that initially Mary did not understand what was happening to her as she watched her body grow and change. After the angel of the Lord revealed to Mary that her baby was conceived by the Holy Spirit and would be the Son of God, she realized the great thing God had done for her said:

47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,

48 for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden.

For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed;

49 for he who is mighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his name.

50 And his mercy is on those who fear him

from generation to generation.

51 He has shown strength with his arm,

he has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts,

52 he has put down the mighty from their thrones,

and exalted those of low degree;

53 he has filled the hungry with good things,

and the rich he has sent empty away.

54 He has helped his servant Israel,

in remembrance of his mercy,

55 as he spoke to our fathers,

to Abraham and to his posterity for ever.”

This passage of scripture is known as “Mary’s Song”

When we celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus we should remember the woman God used to bring him here and her amazing faith. In that day, the Law said that an unmarried woman who became pregnant should be stoned to death. Mary knew this, but she trusted God was doing a new thing in her and that he would bring her through.

As we contemplate how the birth of Christ changed the world forever, let us consider how the birth of Christ in us is changing our life. No matter how old we are or how long we have been in church, Christ can do a new thing in us if we trust God as Mary did. Many times change is scary but like Mary we can embrace what God is doing and sing our own song.

She begins her song with “My soul magnifies the Lord”. The word magnify here means “to honor, praise and worship”. Magnify also means “to make bigger and greater”. So Mary’s response to the new thing God was doing in her life was to trust Him, honor Him, praise Him, and worship Him. Mary wanted to make God bigger and greater in her life.

So what about us? What about the new thing God is doing in our life? When Christ has been born in us we will continue to grow spiritually as long as we are here on the earth. Growth means change and change is not easy, but we can trust Him, honor Him, praise Him, and worship Him. As we grow we can make him bigger and greater in our life in the coming year. We can all have a song like Mary. I pray that you do because the same God that changed Mary’s life can change yours too.
