Christian Ministry Annual Meeting Jan. 18

Lincoln Herald Staff

LINCOLNTON, N.C.––Christian Ministry’s annual meeting will be held Jan. 28 at 7 p.m.

The place to be is Emmanuel Lutheran Church, located at 216 S. Aspen St. in Lincolnton, according to the ministry’s executive director, Mitzi Williams. On Thursday, Williams said the yearly meeting is an important time for the organization’s supporters.

“January is a month of reflection around the ministry,” she said. “It is when we gather information for our annual meeting of the member churches. This is a time when we share what each ministry has done over the past year and what we hope to do in the coming year. Everyone is invited! If you are interested in knowing more about the ministry, this is a good way to learn. We look forward to seeing you there!”

In other news, Williams said the ministry’s soup kitchen needs coverage on Jan. 21, the annual observance of the Martin Luther King Holiday.

“Time is closing in,” she said, “and we still do not have coverage. Please call the ministry if your family or church is interested in filling this need.”

Also right around the corner, as Williams noted, is Christian Ministry’s annual “Souper Bowl of Caring,” benefitting its soup kitchen.

“During the holidays,” she said, “the generous donations of the season are used for those who need help during this time. The post-holiday season is a time for replenishing needed supplies. The ‘Souper Bowl of Caring’ has become an annual tradition for many congregations, schools and other youth-led communities. It can make a big difference for charities, such as ours, that serve the community’s most vulnerable. During the week before the Super Bowl football game, dollars and canned goods are collected and donated through various ‘Souper Bowl of Caring’ events.”

She continued that the first “Souper Bowl of Caring” was held more than 20 years ago, with only 22 churches. It has since grown into a nationwide annual event. Christian Ministry Soup Kitchen had 35 churches that participated last year, with a total of $12,163.80 collected, Williams informed.

“Currently,” she said, “we feed an average of 140 meals per day, seven days a week, and that amount of money provided 24,328 meals in our county (last year). This year, we are estimating that 38,800 meals will be served in the soup kitchen. It is with your help that we are able to provide this much needed ministry.

“Participation is easy,” she added, “with free materials supplied to support your group’s efforts. It can be as simple as making an announcement one week and collecting from your congregation, school or civic club the next week. One item of canned goods or one dollar per person can make a huge difference.”

Williams emphasized that it’s also very important to report your totals on the Website at Or call 1-800-358-SOUP (7687) so your donations may be counted in the national total and the “Souper Bowl of Caring” movement can continue to grow.

“We sincerely hope you will consider the Christian Ministry Soup Kitchen for your ‘Souper Bowl of Caring’ collection,” she said. “Christian Ministry of Lincoln County is working to eliminate hunger in our county, and it relies on the partnership of individuals and groups to achieve this goal.”

Christian Ministry is located at 230 E. Water St. in downtown Lincolnton. Call (704) 732-2691 for more information.
