Gold Ain't Scared Of Fire

Dr. Vince Hefner, Pastor
First Baptist Church, Cherryville, NC

As men are measured by time and circumstances, he was greater than most. He was a man who loved God, set a great example for his family, and was respected by his friends. The eyes of this man were upon the poor and weak, for he always helped the less fortunate. It takes a special man to help people who cannot reciprocate acts of mercy and kindness. This was just one of the qualities that set this man apart from the rest of his society. It didn’t take long before this man received the attention of a world that cannot be seen with the eyes of a man. Over a series of conversations between the Creator who loves all and the creature that accuses all, this man was put to the Test. When I say the Test, I mean the Test that examines every fiber of a man. It is the Test where a man, any man, will question the very purpose of his existence. This man was no exception.

While this man sought answers as to why tragedy had successfully taken away everything dear to him, his wife and friends attempted to explain the reasons for his loss. No one could bring him an answer that brought him peace about his situation. It is even more painful to go through the Test while family had friends show absolutely no compassion to your thoughts or feelings. The only direction in which the man could turn was to God. For years this man had a great relationship with God. The man molded his character to honor God and was extremely sincere in serving the God who created all things and controlled all things. Now this once respected and admired person was diminished to a, “Caricature of Failure.” The question has to be asked, “Where does he go from here?”

What does a man or woman do when the Test comes to him? What does he do during that period of time when there is no known reason for something terrible happening and no known reason on how to correct it. The Test might be in the form of a health issue, financial collapse, death of a loved one, or any circumstance that would make you question God. What would be your response? Would you run and hide from life? Would you pretend that it didn’t bother you and go through life pretending all is well? The man in this story continued to search God for his answer. Of course, the man is Job, an Old Testament character who endured great pain even as he firmly believed that God was his Redeemer. Job never received all the answers as to why hard times had come into his life, but he knew what God had placed in his soul would never perish. Whatever the Test would throw in his direction, Job knew God would deliver him from the worst of times into the best of times. Job 23:10 says, “But He knows the way that I take; when He has tested me, I shall come forth as gold.” When I read this verse, I realized something, “Gold ain’t scared of fire.” Fire can destroy most things, but gold will always remain gold!

The next time you feel you are facing the Test, remember this profound truth. What God has placed in your heart, no man, no circumstance, nor being of evil can take it away from you. I may not understand any mystery of life, but I never have to doubt that the eternal nature of God is in all of His followers, including me! Take courage today friends, Jesus will not leave us or forsake us. It is His desire to walk with us through every season in our lives, the good ones and the challenging ones.

Remember, don’t’ give in to sin. Think about it!
