  • Kastner Bible Display, Now – August 31 --- In the Gathering Room at the Gaston County Museum of Art & History, 131 W. Main Street, Dallas, NC 28034 the Kastner Bible will be on display until August 31. Each year the Museum displays the bible for a few weeks highlighting a new woodcut print. This year’s featured woodcut illustration focuses on Ezekiel 1. Printed in 1564 in Germany, the Kastner Bible came to America with Adam Kastner in 1745. Because of its large size and the lack of family records inside, this would not have been a family bible; it is believed to have been a “pulpit bible,” one that would have been used in a church. It is a corrected version of Martin Luther’s first translation of the Bible into German, featuring over 730 pages and woodcut illustrations. The Kastner Bible made its way to the Rhyne family of this area and was handed down through the family until it was donated to the Gaston County Museum. This bible is the oldest object in GCM’s collections. It was professionally conserved some years ago by the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C.
