LINCOLNTON, N.C.––In the Gospel of St. Matthew, Christ tells His Disciples, “The poor you shall always have with you.”
As the Scriptures also tell us, it was for the poor that Christ came. And the good folks at Christian Ministries are living out the meaning of that central tenet of Christianity: helping the poor.
According to executive director Mitzi Williams, the needs are great. Williams said Thursday that the ministry’s emergency services needs sheet sets in all sizes, including twin, double, queen and king-sized varieties. The clothing closet needs help, too.
“We are totally out of men’s, women’s and children’s underwear,” said Williams. “We also need men’s T-shirts.”
The food pantry needs corn, peanut butter, Chef Boyardee foods, crackers, pop-top canned meats and canned beans (not green beans).
Talking of food, the soup kitchen needs volunteer coverage on Nov. 29 (the day after Thanksgiving). And the LINC Meals program, which delivers meals to local elderly and shut-in residents, needs drivers on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
And get out your running shoes and start planning now for the “Amazing Race Against Hunger.” This fundraiser for Christian Ministry’s efforts will be held Oct. 6 in downtown Lincolnton.
“Teams are raising money now,” said Williams. “The more money raised, the higher the points each teams earns.”
