Here Jesus tells his disciples that foolish people will hear his message and walk away unchanged while wise people will hear his message and be willing to live by them. Those who are willing to live by them will have a spiritual foundation as strong as a rock that can withstand any storm. Life is a constant struggle of one storm after another. We need to be like the wise builders if we want the confidence of knowing the solid rock of Christ is strong enough to help us stand and not fall apart no matter what happens. That sounds good but how does it work?
I found out that rocks are made in three ways. Metamorphic rocks are formed by different kinds of rock coming together with great heat and pressure over a long time. Igneous rocks are formed by volcanoes that spew hot lava that cools and hardens over many years. Sedimentary rocks are formed when a river carries small rocks downstream where they settle on top of each other and after thousands of years they compact together and harden. This tells us that it takes a long time to make a rock and it isn’t easy.
In the same way, building our spiritual foundation on the rock of Christ takes time and it isn’t easy. It takes work and every time we choose to put his words into practice it adds a little more of what we need to create the spiritual rock upon which we can build a life that is storm proof. The longer we live and the more we put His words into practice, the bigger and stronger our spiritual foundation will become. The storm-proof spiritual foundation of Christ is formed over the course of our life by the way we live every day and we have the choice to put His words into practice or not.
Putting his words into practice is more than reading the Sermon on the Mount so study all four gospels and build on your spiritual foundation of rock today. When the next storm comes, you’ll be glad you did.
