Some of you send me things that I can use in future columns and I hold them until the time is right. This column speaks to timely events to make the gospel relevant so if you haven’t seen your submission yet just hang on because I am waiting to use it and you will see it eventually.
Several months ago, Marie Jenkins of Lincolnton sent me something she wrote called “Proud to Be an American” and with the July 4th celebration coming this weekend this is a good time to share it with you. Right now, we might be feeling pretty weary of all the crisis in our country, and although we aren’t a perfect country, we serve a perfect God. With God’s help we will find our way out of this time of confusion and chaos. The is still the greatest country on earth, and we will survive because many people feel the same way that Marie describes in these words:
“In America there is freedom of hope in every tomorrow. Freedom to live, grow, and learn. It is a land of opportunity where my children and grandchildren can dream dreams of soaring to the moon or being the President and those dreams can become realities. I am free to bow my head and worship with my Catholic or Protestant neighbors. It is a spacious land of golden wheat fields and corn where hunger can be stilled and the man with work worn hands can stand in dignity beside his white collared brother.
I have freedom of learning and freedom of speech to say what I think and believe in myself. I am proud to be an American with tears in my eyes and pride in my heart as I salute my flag, remembering how great a price was paid and is still being paid for our freedom. It is a land of God breathed freedoms – fought for, sacrificed for, and bathed in blood by those who were and still are willing to give their utmost for those they don’t even know. I’m proud to be an American. God bless America.”
Thank you, Marie. I don’t think I could have said anything better myself on our nation’s birthday.
