They’re spreading the gospel and keeping the faith.
They’re the members of gospel group Faithful Voices, and they’ll be performing near you in the near future. According to group spokesman Sam Hovis, the Voices’ tenor, they’ll be bringing their musical message of hope to Love Memorial Baptist Church at 311 E. Walnut Ave. in Gastonia, Aug. 30 at 6 p.m.; and to homecoming services at Blessed Hope Baptist at 1659 Old Conover-Startown Road in Newton, Sept. 13 at 11 a.m. and at Centerview Baptist at 2300 Acme Road in Belmont, Sept. 27 at 10:30 a.m.
On Saturday, Hovis told The Herald how it all began.
“Spencer Mountain Baptist Church had three great singers that started a trio: Dana Lucas, Phyllis Hall and Ted Costner,” he explained. “They sang only at Spencer Mountain Baptist.”
But they soon contacted Hovis, and he began singing with them. Several years later, Costner died, and the group was once more a trio. Hovis then contacted Jack Kimbro, and he joined the group.
“Jack started booking us at churches,” Hovis recalled. “Later, Cathy Tomblin moved back to town and joined the group. Phyllis’s husband passed away, and she remarried and joined another church. Dana began having health issues and decided to retire from the group. Dana was the last member of Spencer Mountain Baptist Church to sing with the group, so we decided to change our name to Faithful Voices.
“About three years ago, Jack began having health issues and retired from the group,” he continued, adding that he, Tomblin and Hall have been singing together for 15 years. “In January of this year, Brian Roberts joined the group.”
Faithful Voices are available to sing for any church-related occasions, such as regular services (morning or evening), homecomings and fifth Sunday night singings, as Hovis informed.
“We also love singing for senior citizens’ events,” he said. “We don’t charge to sing, because we love singing for our great God.”
