God Moments

Every now and then we can have what I call “God moments” when everything else is drawn into the beauty of the Holy Spirit and the fullness of divine Love. I had such a moment this week with my four-year-old grandson Talon on an early Saturday morning when he wanted to show me how he had learned to swing by himself. “No one needs to push me anymore Nana!” he exclaimed with glee. He put his little foot on the ground, pushed off, and began to pump his legs back and forth. He went higher and higher while I sipped my coffee and we were so happy together celebrating his big accomplishment.

He was feeling real joy and began to tell me what was in his heart. “I love you Nana” he said, and I answered, “I love you too Talon”. Swinging and swinging, he must have been thinking about how good life is for a four-year-old. Swinging and swinging he sang out the love he was feeling - “I love my Mom!” Swinging and swinging, “I love my brothers!” Swinging and swinging, “I love my sisters!”. Swinging and swinging, “I love my house!” Swinging and swinging – “I love my teacher!” Swinging and swinging “I love my cats and dogs!” Swinging and swinging “I love God!” Swinging and swinging “I love Jesus!”

His joy touched me, and Love began to sing in my heart too. I felt so grateful for all my blessings. I love my children and grandchildren. I love my animal children. I love my little house. I love my garden. I love the work God has called me to do working with the least of these in this world. I love my church. I love my friends. I love the beauty of the creation. I love writing this column. I love my readers. I love God. I love Jesus.

In that moment it was just Talon and I swinging together in God’s unconditional love. The world and all its troubles had faded away. My grandson’s life has not been easy this past year and neither has mine. We have both been through a lot, but in that “God moment” everything was peace and all we felt was Love. I wanted that time to last forever and although that wasn’t possible, the effect of swinging together in the Holy Spirit that morning will stay with me. I’m sure I will remember it forever.

1 John 4:8 says, “Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.” I like to flip this scripture around and say it this way “Whoever loves knows God because God is love” Jesus said if we want to experience the kingdom we must become like little children. That day Talon’s Love song showed me the kingdom and I joined him there. I’m so glad I have grandchildren to take my hand and lead me into the kingdom where politics, disease, economic distress, and other worldly problems have no place. We need these God moments to encourage our hearts and give us time in the kingdom to refresh us spiritually.

I pray that you will have a God moment soon. Children help take us there but anyone who expresses Love expresses God and can help bring others into the kingdom.
