LINCOLNTON––Christian Ministry of Lincoln County is in need of help.
That’s the word this week from executive director Mitzi Williams. She noted how this year’s season is very different, including how the ministry is missing out on funding due to cancelled fundraisers, which in turn are down to state-mandated, virus-related restrictions. But the ministry’s clients still need help, as Williams emphasized.
“Requests for help have not stopped,” she said. “Power companies are requiring customers to make payments on overdue bills, along with paying their current bills. Even though property-owners cannot evict tenants, payment plans have to be established. This is all happening to the working poor: the people who live paycheck to paycheck.”
July 1-Sept. 30, Christian Ministry was able to give out $22,000 to help people with rent and utilities, as Williams revealed.
“This was only possible because so many were so generous this past spring,” she said. “Thank you! The perfect storm is coming together. At a time when we are getting requests for extremely high financial help, our financial donations are down––way down. We would have to go back to 2015 to see receipts as low as September’s were. Our member churches, whose support we depend on, are struggling just to meet under the governor’s orders. Our local businesses are also struggling to stay open. All this, just weeks before we kick off our biggest fundraiser of every year, the Christmas Fund.”
How can you help?
Williams said you can
financially give what you can;
start thinking of ways to donate food and toys;
volunteer to help in the clothes closet, so it can begin accepting donations again;
and get a group of five to eight people together and volunteer in the soup kitchen on an open weekend or holiday.
Christian Ministry of Lincoln County is located at 207 S. Poplar St. in downtown Lincolnton. Call (704) 732-2691 or (704) 732-0383 for more information on these and other upcoming efforts, as well as volunteer opportunities for individuals and church and business groups.
