Yes Prayers

When I ask God to help me, I hope the answer will be yes. We may struggle to carry our burdens alone because we aren’t sure God can or will help us, but Jesus said we could ask God for help and never be disappointed.

Matthew 7:7-8 “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. This sounds good but what does it really mean? Another scripture says we may ask and not receive from God because we did not ask for the right things for the right reasons. James 4:3” When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures. How can we ask God to help us and be confident that the answer will be yes?

1 John 5:14-15 14 This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.

John says that we can be confident that God will say yes to our prayers and answer them if our requests line up with His will for us. The Greek word used in the original text for God’s “will” in this passage means “desire”, so this means God’s will is what God desires or what God wants. God’s will for us is that we will think and act in ways that are in agreement with what God wants for us. This passage says when we pray in God’s will, when we ask God for something that he wants for us, He hears us, and the answer is yes. How does this work? How can we have yes prayers?

Romans 12:1-2   12 Therefore, I urge you,(A) brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice,(B) holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform(C) to the pattern of this world,(D) but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.(E) Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is(F)—his good, pleasing(G) and perfect will.

When we live for Him in everything we think, say, and do, God will give us a spiritual mind to see our life as He sees it. We learn to surrender to the Holy Spirit every day and ask for spiritual blessings to help us meet the challenges of life.

Ask the Lord for strength, forgiveness, wisdom, clarity, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Asking God to help us grow spiritually in response to the trials and tribulations of life are “yes prayers” because spiritual growth is always in His will. Paul prayed for his thorn to be removed and God said no, but God said yes to giving him power to endure it. With yes prayers for spiritual growth, problems in our lives often resolve themselves in ways that we could not have foreseen or we will have the spiritual resources to endure them.
