ALEXIS––Local gospel music veteran Sam Hovis is well known for singing God’s praises.

And relatedly this week, Hovis sang the praises of his church, Alexis Baptist, and its sister church, Mt. Zion Baptist, both located in Alexis and just off of NC-27. The Faithful Voices singer spoke further about Mt. Zion and its recent sesquicentennial. Nestled in the rural countryside, nearly straddling the Gaston-Lincoln county line, the church was founded in 1869, and it’s been going strong ever since.

“It’s a great country church that loves its community,” said Hovis. “Several years ago, the church members got together and built a new sanctuary. They did most of the work themselves. Lately they have built a new family life center. The Faithful Voices love to sing there in the summertime, because the church has the best homemade ice cream you will ever put in your mouth! It’s a great church.”

And he offered more details about Alexis Baptist. It was founded in 1903.

“It is also a church that loves its community,” he observed. “It has a food bank, card ministry and a group of people that help senior citizens with things around the house, just to mention a few things about Alexis Baptist.

“Our pastor, Zach Kennedy, has been with us about a year,” Hovis added, “a man of God that loves his flock. We also have a youth pastor, Scott Jenkins, who loves to keep the young people busy. We also have prayer warriors that believe great things are going to happen at Alexis Baptist Church!”
