Honest to God

I came across a book title, ‘Honest to God’, by John A.T. Robinson. It challenged me in the days of my youth to be humble and submissive unto God and not arrogant nor naive before God and man. Many times when we hear something that makes sense to us, we may find ourselves challenged in our beliefs. There are many types of forces to make us change. There’s economical pressure, physical threat, withholding love and absence of friendship, verbal assaults, and more. We are people used to getting what we want as a society. ‘Let me speak to your supervisor' is the one that makes me smile. I’ll never forget saying that one time and the supervisor said to me, “what did the secretary say? If you don’t want to get her fired, you should respect what she told you.” Even now, I remember that with a smile. Still, the point is honesty before God is not what we want many times.

When God drives home the point, love is the most transforming force in the universe, it’s hard to believe. Just a bit of anger goes a long way in getting what you want in our society. Love has many faces and yet nothing says I love you like being inconvenienced for the sake of the one you love. Oh, and did I mention, not being upset over it. When Jesus died on the cross he didn’t say to the people, “look at what you have done, you have killed me, the son of God. Now you’re going to get yours.” No, he didn’t say that. ‘Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.” How does one comprehend the trust Jesus had in love?

Would God honor that prayer of forgiveness, did Jesus utter that phrase in a moment of weakness? No, Jesus simply believed in the power of forgiveness motivated by love. Can you imagine the love of God so available to you, your sins are removed and the harm you have done is looked upon no more? God can. We can too. Love is the power that can transcend all powers in changing people. It can make an enemy a friend. It can make a bad situation better. One can suffer for doing right, knowing it is love that wins the day. Don’t think for a second love can’t win. We may not be here to see the victory; Jesus was here on earth a short time to see the beginning of the early church and then he ascended. Love was set into motion and the church evolved. Love can do many things. It is to me like the water that freezes between the rocks on a mountain and ultimately fractures a huge boulder by the mere nature of freezing and expansion of the rock cracks. Ultimately, the boulder is broken asunder. Love is like that. It can break barriers. It can crack the hardest heart. Let it begin with yours.
