On many occasions during our nation's history, US Presidents have called on the American people to pray. The observance of a day of prayer actually precedes our country's origin. Because of friction between the American colonists and England, some American cities and colonies proclaimed days of prayer in the years leading up to the Revolution.
Our first President, George Washington, called for a day of prayer during the Revolutionary War. The day of prayer was revived by President Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War.
On April 17th, 1952, President Harry Truman signed a bill proclaiming a National Day of Prayer should be declared by each President at a date of his choice. In 1988, the law was amended so the day would be on the first Thursday in May.
Observances of the National Day of Prayer in Lincoln County include one on the Courtsquare at noon led by Alan Hoyle. At Sally's YMCA in Denver, they'll live stream a service from the Charlotte Y at 7:30. At 6 PM, the Lincoln County Family YMCA in Lincolnton will hold a prayer service near the parking lot in front of the Y. Several ministers will participate and anyone who cares to do so may come and join in the prayers. Music is also planned.
In Dallas, area churches will have a National Day of Prayer gathering on the lawn of the historic Dallas courthouse.
