A little over three weeks ago I was sitting on a beach just outside of Nags Head, a beautiful part of the Outer Banks in North Carolina. While listening to the waves crash and roll under my chair, I was reading an article related to hatching chickens. Aftering laying my phone to the side, I kept referring back to that article and even queried a few questions of my own. Being on vacation, I tried to only think about that week away from home instead of the next week (when we arrived back to reality). I knew I had to put this data to the test - but that’s besides the point.

Living on a farm, hatching chickens comes pretty natural to my grandfather and me. Maybe I should say its something normal and not out of the ordinary. It's sort of like holding a newborn lamb: many people are often amazed by petting one. However, it's simply a way of life for us because we have approximately two-hundred born after Christmas each winter. After a few days of unpacking and settling back from vacation I made a place for the incubator and plugged it in for a few testing hours. Sure enough, it worked! Late one evening I gathered some eggs from the hen boxes and carefully placed them in the egg turner.

One particular morning in the midst of a few other farm duties I stopped to add water in the small trays which lay under the egg turner. Feeling a few of the eggs, I listened and prayed for just one “peep” - knowing it was way too soon. Standing there admiring the beautiful assortment of brown, white and greenish colored eggs, I was delighted. I had been pouring water into the incubator for about twelve days and continued to tell myself that I would eventually hear more than just one “peep” and see some cracked shells.

I was basically pouring water into a tray twice a day, everyday and getting nothing from it - YET!

After completing the tasks and going on about my day I thought to myself, “those eggs have taught me so much.” And trust me, they have. Incubating this batch of eggs has given me an abundance of patience, a new outlook on my faith and changed how I view circumstances in life.

After continuing to think of all the life lessons I have been taught by just tending to eggs, I asked myself this specific question:

“Why do I lose faith when God doesn’t give me exactly what I pray for right when I think I need it?”

And so, since that day I have reminded myself multiple times that I should continue pouring (not necessarily water) but faith and love on those who need it most. Even when God doesn’t grant me with what I have most recently asked for I need to continue pouring out his love. In Lamentations he tells us to do just that.

Pour out your heart like water in the presence of the Lord. - Lamentations 2:19 NIV

It’s as though I began questioning myself as to why I could “lose faith” in a God great enough to create tiny chickens in each egg. As if his miracles are not already miraculous enough he has certainly grasped my attention throughout these 21 days. (The estimated incubation period for regular sized chicken eggs.)

Often I am more inspired by the back story instead of simply “hatching eggs”. I hope my story will encourage each of you to continue to pour God’s grace on one another and that it awakens your heart as much as it did mine.

I am yearning to see what other lessons God will teach me through chickens - of all things, once they hatch!
