Kayla Marie Jackson is the 2019 Lincoln County Apple Queen.  Tears flowed as she was crowned by 2018 Apple Queen Destiny Self.  Jackson, a 2019 graduate of East Lincoln High school, was chosen from 13 contestants.

The pageant flowed beautifully except for a computer problem that caused many of the recorded videos in which the contestants described themselves, their favorite activities and their goals and aspirations to pause unexpectedly.  Multiple efforts to correct the problem failed and eventually the rest of the contestants made their interview appearances without the video.

The stage settings for the pageant were highly praised.  They were constructed by the apprentices under the direction of Karen Hovis.

Bryce Carey, emcee for the event for the fifth consecutive year, adlibbed his way through a few awkward moments including the video failure.

The pageant was directed by 2013 Apple Queen Erica Miller who has also filled that role for five years.

Apprentices read short statements about outstanding local women in keeping with the theme of the pageant for this year.  United Way Director Kathy Vinzant, Child Advocacy Center Director Sherry Reinhardt, County Commissioner Anita McCall, City Council member Mary Frances White and School Board chair and Lincoln Cultural Center director Cathy Davis were highlighted in the remarks.

Kacey Francela Solero Cubillo was the third runner-up. She'll be a senior this year at Lincolnton High School.

Mary Carol Field, who was third runner-up last year, decided to compete again and was second runner-up this year. She was popular with the audience, who again named her the 'people's choice' awarding her the Apple of My Eye award again this year.  Field, a 2019 North Lincoln High School graduate, is planning to attend the University of North Carolina-Charlotte this Fall.

First runner-up honors went to Scarlett Victoria Berryhill. This was the first year that homeschooled students were allowed to enter the contest. Berryhill said she had reservations about the swimsuit competition, but found it to be a confidence building experience.

The Noël Beam Howard Memorial Scholarship essay contest winner was Raemy Brynn Wensil, whose essay about her Angel Bows project to help cancer victims was judged the best. The award is named for the 1971 Miss Lincoln County who died in 2016 from ovarian cancer.  It is presented by her family.  Raemy also won the Signature Page award for selling the most ads. She will be a senior this year at East Lincoln High School.

Sophie Arin Powell was named Miss Congeniality. She's a 2019 West Lincoln grad.

The new Apple Queen, Kayla Jackson, scored highest of all contestants in the swimsuit segment, and Gia Kate-Nicole Rudisill scored highest in evening wear.

The pageant is the first of several events related to the Apple Festival. The ECA Fried Pie Sale will happen the week of August 12-16 in the kitchen at the James W. Warren Citizens Center. An annoucement of the winner in the Apple Festival T-Shirt Design Contest is expected shortly; the deadline for entries was July 31st. The Apple Festival, which had traditionally been held the third Saturday in September, has been moved to October and this year's event will be Saturday October 19th from 9 AM - 4 PM in downtown Lincolnton.
