STANLEY––It was an evening of patriotic music, tribute speeches and honoring local veterans.

It was the inaugural Stanley Area Veterans’ Day Event, held Sunday night at Stanley Pentecostal Holiness Church. Abraham Turner, a retired major general of the United States Army, was the featured speaker. Turner was joined by Stanley Mayor Steven Denton; Stanley Town Manager Heath Jenkins; event spokesman and organizer Bob Mahovsky of the Stanley Cemetery Ancestry Fund; local pastor and event organizer Rev. Dr. Claude Williams; Rep. John Torbett of the North Carolina General Assembly; and Rev. Danny Penny, Stanley Pentecostal’s pastor, amongst others.

Recapping the event on Monday, Denton extolled all veterans.

“It’s always an honor to celebrate our military veterans,” he said. “Major General Abraham Turner delivered an amazing keynote address. Special thanks go out to the Marine Corps League and everyone who attended the Veterans’ Day event last night. Thank you to all our veterans for your service to this great country.”

And Tuesday, Denton told The Herald more.

“We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the brave men and woman who serve our great nation,” he said. “The Stanley Area Veterans’ Day Event was our way of saying ‘thank you’ to all our veterans.”

Denton also extended thanks to Turner; to Penny and his church for hosting the event; and to Williams and Mahovsky for organizing it.

Mahovsky recently told The Herald that the nearby Stanley Cemetery, adjacent Christ’s Lutheran Church and dating back some 200 years, is the final repository for some 111 veterans. He added that it’s very much a place worth preserving and taking care of.
