Monday May 31st is Memorial Day, a day which commemorates the men and women who died while in the military service of their country, especially those who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in battle. The purpose of Memorial Day is to honor the veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. It differs from Veterans Day (Nov. 11th) which is intended to honor all who served including those still liviing.

In 1950 Congress passed a resolution asking the President to "issue a proclamation calling upon the people of the United States to observe...Memorial Day, by praying, each in accordance with his religious faith, for permanent peace." The annual observance was on May 30th until 1970.  In 1968, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act was passed by Congress, creating one of several 'three-day weekends' by placing certain holidays on Mondays.  Beginning in 1971, Memorial Day has been observed on the last Monday in May.

The pandemic caused many regular annual observances to be canceled in 2020.  This year, Memorial Day will be observed in Lincolnton with a brief ceremony on the east side of the Lincoln County Courthouse from 2 - 3 PM Monday.  Sheriff Bill Beam will be the main speaker. Chris Duschel will also speak.

On Sunday (May 30th) the Lincolnton VFW will have its Veterans Day ceremony that had to be canceled last year due to the virus.  Members of the choir from First United Methodist Church will sing the national anthem and Lincolnton Mayor Ed Hatley will speak.  Following the ceremony, the luminaries in the shape of a cross will be lighted on the lawn in front of the VFW.

Monday will be a holiday for government offices.  Libraries will also be closed.  For those who wondered, no, the pool at Betty Ross Park will not open Monday.  The  pool will open next weekend  (the first weekend of June). Due to a shortage on staff, for the month of June,  the pool will only be open to the public on Saturdays  and Sundays. Week dates for pool usage are available by appointment only for large groups and daycares (this schedule is subject to change). To schedule an appointment contact the pool director Shelby Barkley at [email protected] or call 704-735-2671.

The splash pad at First Federal Park on N. Poplar Street is now open.  Many children enjoyed it this past weekend.  It's open  Monday-Saturday from dawn until dusk and on Sunday from 1 PM until dusk.
