Dale Punch was at a meeting where someone told about a project that had been undertaken in another city, a salute to veterans.  He liked the idea and decided it should be a project of the local American Legion post and that he would see it through.

Time passed, and Cherryville got its banners up last year.  Punch asked permission from the City Council and they enthusiastically agreed to the project.  Punch accepted photos of vets and those who wanted to salute them paid a fee that provided the funds for the project.  The banners went on display this week from Flint Street to and around the Courtsquare.  They'll remain on display through Veterans Day.  Now the property of the City, they'll then be stored until next year.

Punch says he has had many people ask about adding more veteran posters--and he says that will happen, but not immediately.  "I don't want to be holding on to the money waiting for the next round of posters," he told us.  "We'll announce another round--but not right away.  Right now, I'm glad to have seen this project through and proud of the results.  I need a little R&R."

The banners display both men and women who served, some living, some deceased.  Among them is one on the Courtsquare honoring David Milo Wright, for whom the local American Legion post is named.  All of the ones on the Courtsquare are of those who gave their lives in service.

The Lincoln Herald hopes to acquire the banner cover sheet that was used to print the banners and publish the entire group so those who are unable to go see them for themselves will have the opportunity to see them.
