Chances are you may already have seen this; after all, it was posted on the City of Lincolnton website.  But unless you were looking for it, maybe not.  It's posted under 'Government,' then 'Departments,' then 'Parks & Recreation,' and then, to see it, you have to click on 'Hometown Hero's Banner' on the menu on the left side of the page [Forgive the misspelling, it's posted that way, it should say 'Hometown Heroes Banners'--it's a plural, not a possessive].

Last year, Dale Punch initiated the project to put banners honoring those men and women who either had served for were serving in the military on the lamp posts along Main Street and around the Courtsquare.  It wasn't a new idea; it had been done already in several other towns and cities including Cherryville.  Cherryville posted its banners from just before Memorial Day until Veterans Day; but Dale said the banners were inappropriate for Memorial Day--that's meant to honor those who died while serving.  Lincolnton's banners would be displayed just before and after Veterans Day, which honors all who served.

Those who wanted to honor a family member (living or deceased) who served or was still serving in the US military were invited to help fund the project by paying $100 (the cost of making the banners) and supplying an acceptable photo of the individual.

The project was a great success.  It was very well received by the public and Mayor Ed Hatley said it was "perhaps the finest thing that has happened while I've been mayor."

The banners created last year were stored by the City and will be put on display again this year; and those who would like are invited to add more veterans to the display by once again paying for a banner.  The price is still the same, and while they won't be displayed for Memorial Day, as another military-related observance, it's an appropriate time for us to remind the public about the continuing project.

If you would like to honor a veteran--ancestor, family member, or friend--who served or is still serving in the military, you can purchase (they become City property) a banner again this year.

All applications, photos, and payments must be received by August 31, 2022.

If you purchased a Hometown Hero banner last year, you do NOT need to submit an application/payment for your banner to be displayed this year.  That has already been approved by the City Council.

If you want to purchase one this year, here's how (as detailed on the City website at https://www.ci.lincolnton.nc.us/617/Hometown-Heros-Banner.

We (the Lincoln Herald) have plans to add two veterans to the banners this year.  We will remind the public that Dale did his job last year getting the project underway.  It is now being handled by the City of Lincolnton Parks & Recreation Department, so please, don't contact Mr. Punch about a banner.
