Following the program Saturday evening, volunteers lighted the luminaries on the lawn of the VFW in the shape of a cross in what has become a Lincolnton tradition.
On Monday, veterans laid wreaths at the monuments on the east side of the Courtsquare saluting the fallen heroes of their branches of service.
People across the country had been asked to take time at 3 PM Monday to reflect on the meaning of the day. The National Moment of Remembrance is an annual event that asks Americans, wherever they are at 3:00 pm local time on Memorial Day, to pause for a duration of one minute to remember those who have died in military service to the United States. TAPS ACROSS AMERICA debuted in 2020 when CBS News “On the Road” correspondent Steve Hartman teamed up with retired Air Force bugler Jari Villanueva, founder of TAPS FOR VETERANS. The two men invited buglers and other musicians to sound Taps from their front porches or elsewhere all at the same time.
Locally, Cain Leonard blew Taps on his trumpet near the memorials on the Courtsquare (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VW8t_rz0Z6Q).
