Hometown Heroes Banners Going Up This Week
The printer had a computer crash and the artwork (photos, etc.) had to be resubmitted. They were finally completed last week and Nathan got them on Friday. City workers had already put up some of last year's banners on the eastern end of the downtown area and the Courtsquare, but the rest of those and the new ones will be put up this week.
Veterans Day is Friday, and since they're late getting put up, Nathan said he has arranged with City Manager Ritchie Haynes to let them stay up a little longer. The City will go ahead with wrapping the garland and lights on the poles for Christmas, but they won't change out the banners for Christmas banners until after Thanksgiving weekend. That means the Hometown Heroes banners will still be on display when Lincolnton holds its Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting on the Sunday after Thanksgiving.
A Veterans Day parade and brief ceremony on the east side of the old courthouse is planned for Friday--but it will most likely be rained out. The weather is calling for heavy rain Friday.
Numerous schools are doing special programs for Veterans Day. Union Elementary will have its Veterans Breakfast Thursday morning (Nov. 10th). This will be the 12th annual breakfast for veterans at Union. Rock Springs Elementary School will have a Veterans Breakfast on Wednesday (Nov. 9th). Following the breakfast, they'll have a program outside in front of the school.
In Catawba County the Justice Center in Newton will be illuminated in green beginning Monday night and continuing through next weekend as part of Operation Green Light, a new nationwide initiative supported by the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners, the National Association of Counties and the National Association of County Veteran Service Officers.
