LINCOLNTON––The ability to read is the one skill that unlocks all the other branches of knowledge.

And it is perhaps with that in mind that the Asbury Academy (formerly the old Asbury Elementary School) recently installed a Little Free Library. According to Karen Dellinger, the public information officer and media services co-ordinator for the Lincoln County Schools, the efforts were co-ordinated by Jericka Ross. The library recently had a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

“Mrs. Ross received an impact grant from the Little Free Library Organization to bring the library to the community,” Dellinger explained. “Impact grants are free book-sharing boxes awarded to underserved communities or ‘book deserts.’”

They’re popping up everywhere, throughout America and around the world. These little boxes, filled with books and often resembling dolls’ houses, are quite popular.

The Little Free Library is a nonprofit organization based in St. Paul, Minn. Its mission is to be a catalyst for building communities, inspiring readers and expanding book access for everyone through a global network of volunteer-led Little Free Library book-exchange boxes.

Its vision is a Little Free Library in every community and a book for every reader. Library representatives believe all people are improved when the opportunity to discover a personally relevant book to read is not limited by time, space or access.
