The Gaston County Board of Education is conducting a survey to seek input from parents, school employees, business/civic leaders, and others in the community as part of the process to select the next superintendent of Gaston County Schools.

Dr. Jeffrey Booker, who had served as Gaston County Schools Superintendent since 2014, resigned at the end of the 2022-2023 school year.

The Superintendent Search Survey is available now on the homepage of the Gaston County Schools website (www.gaston.k12.nc.us). The deadline to complete the survey is July 17th.

“Our Superintendent Search Survey is an essential component of the Board of Education’s process to select the next superintendent for Gaston County Schools,” said Board of Education chairman Jeff Ramsey. “The survey asks people about what they would like to see in the person who is selected to be our new superintendent. It includes questions about the characteristics, experience, knowledge, and skills that the person chosen to lead the school system should possess.”

Ramsey added, “We encourage everyone associated with Gaston County Schools to take the survey, and we hope people will share the survey link with family members, neighbors, and friends as feedback from all stakeholders in the Gaston County community is important to us.”

The North Carolina School Boards Association (NCSBA) is facilitating the superintendent search process for the Board of Education. NCSBA will compile, summarize, and present the survey data to the Board of Education in August.

Effective July 1st, Dr. Stephen C. Laws will serve as interim superintendent while until a permanent superintendent is hired by the Board of Education.  Dr. Laws, who lives in Gastonia, has served as an associate professor of education at Gardner-Webb University since 2011.  From 2003 until 2011, he was the superintendent of Wilkes County Schools, and was the superintendent of Elkin City Schools from 1998 until 2003. He began his education career as a teacher at Bessemer City High School.
