Thousands were left without electricity, some roads were closed, one person was killed in Gaston County, and students in Gaston & Cleveland counties won't have school Thursday (May 9th) due to the Wednesday afternoon storm.
Rescheduled for September 14th
The Lincolnton Food, Wine & Brew Fest originally scheduled for Saturday May 4th has been rescheduled for the second Saturday in September (Sept. 14th). No festival this week, but there's still plenty to see and do.
GNEM Coming to Lincoln County
Lithium is the future--thanks to the growth in electric vehicles and other needs for the mineral. The NC Dept. of Commerce announced this past week that Green New Energy Materials, Inc., a manufacturer of a key component in lithium-ion betteries, will establish its first US operation in eastern Lincoln County, providing 55 new jobs with a $140 million investment.
United Methodists Approve LGBTQ Changes
Denominaion adopts new definition of marriage, approves LGBTQ ordination
After differences over sexual orientation have led to a mass exodus of churches, the United Methodist Church convened a two-week session in Charlotte that made major changes in doctrine. The UNC will now bless same-sex marriages and ordain LGBTQ clergy.

The weather forced the postponement of the Food, Wine & Brew Fest until September, but Alive After Five for 2024 is coming Thursday May 23rd.
Mitchem Out, Davis In as Commissioners Chair
Carrol Mitchem was removed from the chairmanship of Lincoln County Commissioners in a special called meeting Wednesday afternoon (May 1st). Commissioners then chose Commissioner Cathy Davis to serve as chair.

YMCAs Update
Lincoln County Commissioners cleared the way last Monday night (April 15th) for the transition of the two YMCAs in Lincoln County from being a part of the Greater Charlotte YMCA to become a part of the Catawba Valley Y.

Lincoln County Commissioners have approved the purchase of land for the new East Lincoln Library. It will be on NC273 abuot two miles west of East Lincoln High School.
This Weekend
It's another big weekend in downtown Lincolnton. It all begins with the Spring Art Crawl Friday evening from 5:30 until 9 PM. Saturday will include a Lincoln's Got Talent fundraiser at the Cultural Center beginning at 7 PM; and while you're out an about, you may want to take a short trip over to 311 Motz Avenue where the Westside Cruisers are having their annual Car Show & Swap Meet from 8 AM until 2 PM.

Schools Will Get $6.1 Million
Lincoln County Schools will get an additional $6.1 million for fiscal 2025. Lincoln County Commissioners voted 3-2 to approve the full amount for which schools had asked in a joint session in mid-March.

Remembering George Smith, the Voice of the Wolves

The NC State Wolfpack is in the NCAA Basketball Sweet 16; their chances of winning a national title are not considered good by most sportswriters, but some of us old-timers still remember the 'Cardiac Kids' of 1983 and the superb coaching job of Jim Valvano.
Kickoff to Construction at Historic Courthouse
Lincoln County officials held what was called a 'kickoff' for a construction project on the old Lincoln County Courthouse. While work will soon be underway, it does not mean that the ultimate reuse of the building has been finalized.
The Criticism Got Too Personal
A rezoning request that would have allowed the construction of 162 townhomes at the intersection of NC73 and N. Ingleside Farm Road was withdrawn and won't be considered at Monday night's (March 18th) Lincoln County Commissioners meeting. What bothered this reporter as much or more than the public opposition to the planned development was the way some of those who opposed it took the opportunity to level undue criticism at the property owners--whose philanthropy has helped make East Lincoln a desirable place to live.
Schools Asking for $6.1 Million Budget Increase
At a joint meeting of the Lincoln County Board of Education and Lincoln County Commissioners on Thursday (March 14th) the School Board asked for a big budget increase for the coming fiscal year (2025).
Second Primary Election Set for May 14th
Just when you thought it was all over...at least until November...comes the news that North Carolina will hold a second primary (a runoff election) on May 14th. For most counties, only two statewide races will be included in this second GOP Primary, but in Gaston County, there's one race for County Commissioner that will be on the second primary ballot.

Basketball Playoffs
The 2023-2024 basketball season for area high school teams has come to an end. The last team from our area to fall in the playoffs was the Lincoln Charter girls, who lost in the West Region championship game to undefeated East Burke, champions of the Catawba Valley Conference.
NCHSAA Basketball Playoffs
The East Lincoln girls lost for only the second time, but this loss ended their season. Lincoln Charter's girls advanced to the semi-finals of the 2A championship series. Here are the scores from Friday night (March 8th).
Council Approves Social District
Lincolnton will soon be joining 55 other North Carolina cities and towns who have approved social districts--areas where alcoholic beverages may be legally consumed in designated public areas.

At the end of the Lincoln County Commissioners special meeting to work on the fiscal 2025 budget, Commission Chairman Carrol Mitchem urged reporters to make sure the public understands "no decision has been made on a new Lincolnton library yet!"

County Commissioners Meeting Feb. 5th
Lincoln County Commissioners held their regular first Monday meeting Feb. 5th. Among other items of business, they reversed a decision to deny a rezoning that will allow a developer to build up to 150 homes near the intersection of NC150 and Shuford Road east of Lincolnton.
Catawba County School Board Meeting About Banning More Books Canceled
The Catawba County Board of Education had scheduled a special called meeting Monday (Feb. 12th) to hear a challenge on two books, "l8r, g8r" and "The Carnival at Bray." The complainant withdrew her complaint and the meeting was canceled.
Girls Wrestling
Five local girls who participated in wrestling this year at East Lincoln & North Lincoln were involved in the NCHSAA Girls Wrestling West Regional.
